Bob,
I have noticed from the wealth of your message traffic both here and at FamilyHistory.com that you have been actively researching the Vroom family line in recent months.I am trying to piece together my Grandfather's family tree.Unfortuantely little is known about he or his father, William A. Vroom.I am sincerely hoping you might be able to shed some light on this Vroom subject for me!
What is known is that my Grandfather, Edward V.H. Vroom was born in 1893 (possibly 1896) in Mellaborn, New Jersey. He married Bernice Shaw of Tulsa Oklahoma in 1930.My dad James Lewis Grey was born in 1935.My Grandfather died in 1965.He was not an approachable person and it was only learned on his death bed that his "real" last name was Vroom (sometime between his honorable discharge from the U.S. military in 1919 after his service in the Corp of Engineers in World War I, and 1930 when he married my Grandmother, he had changed his last name to "Grey").He is buried in Beaumont, Texas, "Edward L. Grey."
Family lore has it that the reason for this name change was because Edward had a fight/disagreement/whatever with his father, a minister.Apparently this could have led to the father, William A. "disowning" his son, Edward. The minister bit, the disowning bit is all conjecture on the surviving family's part - we have no real way to prove any of it...For whatever reason, my Grandfather's family life was never a topic of discussion.
The 1900 New Jersey Census data shows that Edward and his mother and father (Eliza G. and William A. Vroom) lived in Franklin Township, Somerset County, New Jersey.
The V.H. in my Grandfather's name stands for Van Harling, although this has never appeared on any "official" document and is something that is just a part of vague family memory.(perhaps the maiden name of his mom, Eliza G.?)
I have spent a great deal of time on several websites relating to geneology, and have a fairly good feel for the Vroom family tree - both in New Jersey, and in Nova Scotia.I am unfortunately lacking a significant, telling amount of data for my specific family from about 1825-1830 up until the Willam A. and Eliza G. Vroom Census data of 1900 that would allow me to "connect" with the Vroom lineage either in New Jersey, or less likely, in Nova Scotia.
And, as an aside, the Van Harling searches I have done in New Jersey and New York have proven fruitless.I haven't found any web sites for geneological research in Nova Scotia... but I'm just getting started!
If you have any information, helpful hints or suggestions regarding this Edward V.H. Vroom muddle, PLEASE drop me a line! Thanks very much and have a great day!
Lisa (Grey) Boyd
