Looking for Father of Harriet M Winegar - Jonathan M?
My line goes through Harriet M Winegar who married Aaron Putnam Waldo in 1861, Holly, Oakland County, Michigan. Harriet was born Jul 1836 in Kendall, Orleans County, New York.
That is all the information I can prove. Now comes the hard part. On her death certificate, her parents are listed as Jno. Winegar and Mehitable Whitehouse.
I believe that Mehitable is her mother and have found her with Harriet and a son named James (b. 1838) in an 1850 census in Kendall. No father is listed there and Mehitable is the head of household.
I also have found out that Mehitable remarries in 1856 in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan, to a man named Francis Baker (his first marriage was to Abigail Goodrich from Kendall, NY)and lives in Flint, MI. She and this new family are listed in the 1860 and 1870 census along with Harriet (Winegar in 1860, Waldo in 1870).
Now comes the problem. The Winegar and Waldo books state that Mehitable married a Jonathan M Winegar. I found him in the 1850 census (and others up to the 1880 census) living in Handy, Livingston County, Michigan. According to the books, he remarries a Harriet Ray in 1843. Jonathan dies in 1887 after he is run over by a train.
Is this the correct father of my Harriet M Winegar Waldo and he either walked away from Mehitable Whitehouse or divorced her? The other option could be his father, also named Jonathan, is the one I am looking for, possibly a third marriage for him before he moves with his son to Michigan. The only other thing I can come up with is another Jonathan Winegar that passed through Kendall and died there and has not been traced yet.
Does anyone have any thoughts or information on this?? I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on this soap opera.
Thank You,
Kathy
