UPDATE:More research is still necessary, but I now SUSPECT that John and Sarah (Waller) Smith left Mathews Co., VA and moved to Essex Co., VA by 1810.I believe that Sarah died before 1820, and that John apparently died not too long after 1820 (and he was definitely dead by 1822).Their daughter Sarah Waller Smith married in Essex in 1823.I need to return to the Library of VA in the near future to see what I can find on the John Smith family that appeared on the 1810 and 1820 Essex Co., VA censuses.
Note: I now know that the John M. Smith who was on the 1810 census over in Lancaster Co., VA married Sarah Yates Chinn in 1791...and he was NOT the above John Smith who married Sarah Waller in 1788.Also, the James Smith who was in Mathews Co., VA on the 1810 census was almost certainly not the James Smith who was the apparent son of John and Sarah (Waller) Smith. That particular James Smith in Mathews Co., VA in 1810 was born much too early to have been a son of John and Sarah (Waller) Smith.
