Rachael Jean Wattenbarger was shot and klled April 19, 2010 at Park West Medical Center, Knoxville, TN. She had no connection to the killer, who then shot himself.
WATTENBARGER, RACHEL JEAN - 40, of Knoxville, and former resident of Athens, died Monday afternoon, April 19, 2010 in Knoxville. A native of McMinn County, she was the daughter of the late Betty Jean King Wattenbarger and was also preceded in death by her grandparents, O.W. and Mamie Ingram Wattenbarger and Will and Lillie Mae Henry King. She was of the Baptist faith, a graduate of McMinn County High School and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She was associated with Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville as a Medical Social Worker. She is survived by her father; Ray D. Wattenbarger of Athens, several aunts, uncles, and cousins. A funeral service will be conducted 8:00 P.M., Thursday, April 22, 2010, in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Cook officiating. Interment will be 10:30 A.M., Friday in McMinn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 - 7:30 P.M. Thursday, prior to the service. Honorary pallbearers will be Co-workers at Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville. The family suggests memorials be made to the McMinn County Humane Society, 219 Alford Street, Athens, Tennessee 37303.
