Re: Clement StudebakerWeatherwax
Since I was editing my book I spent quite a bit of time unraveling the Clement S. Weatherwax/ Clem Studebaker Weatherwax saga.
Although he may have used the middle name "Studebaker" there is no documented relationship to that family.
His mothers name was Amanda BROTT, not Studebaker I found this when I found the record of his 2nd marriage to Mame Boothby.
The transcription of this marriage record is as follows:
Michigan Marriage records for Van Buren co. MI.
Record date is June 30,1922 Marr#9891
marriage took place on Apr 18,1922
Groom: Clem S. Weatherwax-60yrs-white-Paw Paw-confectioner
Bride: Mame Kendall-58-white-nurse
Mame Boothby -58-white-nurse
Parents of Groom: Andrew Weatherwax/ Amanda BROTT
Parents of Bride: Robert Boothby/ Amanda Takebur
Minister: Orva Lee Ice clergyman
both the bride and groom indicate both had one previous marriage. The marriage took place in Paw Paw MI.
Now to clarify this further I went back and identifed Mame Boothby's parents and siblings:
Robert Boothby and wife Amanda had 6 children. The family appears in USC1870,1880 in Newburg Cass MI
Clearly child number two was Jessie Matilda Boothby, Clements 1st and second wife. They did in fact remarry in 1922. In USC1920 Clem clearly indicates he is divorced and living alone.
In USC 1870 she is identified as:
Jannette age 9 born MI
In USC 1880 she is identifed as:
Eliza J. age 18 born MI.
When Clement's daughter Hattie Belle married her mother was identified in that record as Matilda Roberts (20 Dec 1905)
In the USC for 1880 Newburg & 1910 in Waverly
Clement is identified as Clement S. Weatherwax.
But in USC: 1870 he is identified as just Clement
Again in USC 1900 he is identified as Clement F. Weatherwax
So unless we find a birth record clearly giving a middle initial or name he must remain just Clement S. Weatherwax.
Jessie Matilda Boothby
aka Mame Boothby
aka Mame Kendall
aka Matilda Roberts
died 17 nov 1941 Elkhart IN (your record I believe) I have not yet documented her death. This would seem to indicate that Clement S. Weatherwax married for the 3rd time to Lottie (Charlotte?) Johnson somtime after 1941 no record yet found, but both appear to have been in Waverly Van Buren MI
To try to clarify the"Studebaker issue further I consulted all known Genealogies of the Studebaker family, there are no known Weatherwax marriages or relationships. I even obtained a copy of the Biography of:
" John Studebaker An American Dream " copyright 1948.
since there is a Weatherwax mentioned in this book, but it is a different line, and a Charles Weatherwax not related to Clement. And the location is in California.
I did locate some BLM land records in Day,S. Dakota in 1890 and 1892 that indicate a Clement Weatherwax purchased a total of 320 acres of land. Since USC 1900 indicates Clems two children were born in S.Dakota this confirms the families location during the missing 1890 USC. By 1900 the family returned to Waverly,MI.
Normally in the Weatherwax family when I see a middle initial of S. I usually think first of Sebastian and old family name, then maybe Stephen, but never Studebaker. He may have used it,but there is no documented tie to the Studebaker family.
He would not be the first or last Weatherwax to either adopt a name or alias or simply change positions of their Given and middle names later in life.
I just finnished documenting anther Weatherwax who switched the E.G. Weatherwax to G.E. Weatherwax. Luckily for me there was only 1 Weatherwax family where he was born having childrenand the data matched perfectly. So now I have to show both names to be correct.
This was a worthwhile search as it confirmed Clements mothers maiden name and clerly show two marriaged to the same woman by Clement.
I did find another Amanda Studebaker born in Ohio within 1 year of Amanda Brott, but there was no kknown Weatherwax connection there.
Hopes this helps you some more. And we now know for sure who his mother was and that "Studebaker" may have been an alias he chose to use.
