Wedgbury / Wedgebury beginnings
Wedgbury or Wedgebury is the spelling originating in the 18th /19th centuries for the town now known as Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England. The spelling of the town's name was officially changed, and even debated in parliament, because it was thought too vulgar!
Earlier spellings of the town's name include Wedgeborrow, Wedgeberrow, etc...It was appears to have been taken as a place-name surname to denote origin. My research is tracing most Wedgburys back to areas in thr midlands. The surname is proving to be quite rare. Interesting variations on the surname include Wedgbrow.
