Regarding Franklin James Wedgeworth:
Another possibility for the father of Franklin James is Matthew Wedgeworth, son of Joseph Wedgeworth. Matthew was born in 1800 in Abbeville, SC. He married Elizabeth (last name unknown, but may be Aiken)about 1820 in either SC or Greene Co.,AL. The couple had seven children that we know of. Franklin James could have been another, since we do not have a definitive list of the children.
There is an intriging mystery behind Matthew's life story. The 1850 Census Marshall Co.,AL finds Matthew in jail for murder! We have been unable so far to find out any of the details of this event. However, we do know that in 1850 Matthew is in jail, Elizabeth seems to have died, and all the children are either married on their own, or the younger ones living with their older siblings or relatives. That would explain why Franklin James is living near the James, Junior family.
What I would give to find out Matthew's crime! By 1870 Census Jefferson Co.,AL Matthew is living with his daughter-in-law Nancy Wedgeworth and grandson Lewis. Don't you know there is an interesting story there about Matthew and his family! If only we knew the details!
