Carolyn....
Since I value your thoroughness in your research, I just wanted to ask your opinion on this whole supposed Chapley connection. Could it have occurred even earlier than the North Carolina time frame? I have been looking at spelling variations of the Chapley name. There is a Forum for the Chappelear surname. This is an Anglocized version of Chappelliere or Chapelier, I believe. Having studied French, a colonial could have heard this as Chapley and spelled it as he heard it pronouced. I believe someone on the forum indicated they were of Huegenot descent. This family was in Maryland and in Virginia about the same time frame as our Welborns. They married into the Dent Family. I believe some Welborns married Dents much later in Missouri.
I have just begun to look into this. Do you think it may be worth our while?
