Re: george welsford
I have just noticed you post of January 2008! I suspect that we have family connections. Amongst my research on many parts of both my family and my husband I certainly have a George Robert Welsford of Yarraville. You probably have all the information now but I thought I would send it on to you.George actually gave his date of birth as 3/12/1895 on his enlistment papers in 1917. This was probably so that he could join without his parents consent.
His mother was Mary Frances (Swalwell) Welsford. His father Charles Robert Welsford. Charles'was born in Salisbury England. Your George's birth was not registered until 13th June 1917 which again was probably due to his enlistment. He was born at Whitehall Street, Footscray when Mary was just 18 years of age. He was 24 when he married Nellie May Austin. Their children were Audrey b1923, Robertws (dscd) Rex (dcsd) Valda b1932. Family stories have it thyat Rex died as a small child when a lady came to the door selling fruit. Rex ate the fruit without it being washed and it is believed that it had a pesticide on it. I suspect that you may be Audrey's grandchild as she was a Barty and that you may have another version of this event. George Robert Welsford died at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Parkville on 17th December 1957 at the age of 62 and was buried at the Footscray Cemnetery on the 19th December. He had lived all his life in Yarraville. He was living at Kingsville Street at the time.Prior to that he wsas living in 1919 at 20 Castlemaine Street, Yarraville. 1924 at 50 Bayview Street, Yarraville with Nellie. 1931 they were at 80 Kingsville Street. As a little girl I was in the dancing class of Audrey. Her Uncle Charles who played and taught the piano had a dancing school also. Lots of memories. Let me know if you are interested to hear further of the family. I would be very pleased to receive any information you may have also. Regards Esther.
