Quoting from Cuyler Reynolds's GENEALOGICAL AND FAMILY HISTORY OF SOUTHERN NEW YORK AND THE HUDSON RIVER VALLEY, "The family name of Wendell is derived from the Dutch word 'wandelaar,'signifying a walker, hence a traveler. The first two generations in this country, residing in New Amsterdam and also in Fort Orange, Albany, New York, wrote the name "Wendel,' as is attested by the signatures found upon records, but afterwards it was more generally spelled 'Wendell.'

I would recommend this book and others by the same author. The copy I found was in Clayton Genealogical Library of Houston, TX.If you can't find it in your local library, ask them to see if they can get it on interlibrary loan.
