Andrew Weyant/Weiant and Catherine DeGroat
My 3 greats grandfather was John J. Weyant, born 18 Jan 1827 in Haverstraw, New York and died 1 Sep 1910 in Rio, Wisconsin. He was a son of Andrew Weyant and Catherine DeGroat.
It seems to be generally believed that Andrew Weyant/Weiant, born about 1769, son of John Weyant and Hannah Rider, married first Mary Rogers, and later married Catherine DeGroat (born about 1803).
It always struck me as unlikely that a marriage would occur between 19 year old Catherine and 53 year old Andrew, not impossible, but unlikely.I noted that Andrew's brother John Weyant (1765-1843) and his unknown first wife had a son born about 1803 named Andrew. This younger Andrew seemed a much more likely candidate for Catherine's husband, but I had no more evidence than my theory.
I recently came across mention that Andrew Weyant (actually born 6 July 1779) and his first and only wife, Mary Rogers had migrated from New York to Bennington, Licking County, Ohio.I located them on the 1850 census along with some of their sons and their families.Andrew died 21 Feb 1858 and Mary (born 19 Apr 1782) died 27 May 1858.They were buried in Bennington Chapel Cemetery.
Feeling reasonably sure that Andrew Weyant born 1769 or 1779 did not marry Catherine DeGroat, I feel more confident that Andrew Weyant, born 1803, nephew of the Andrew who migrated and died in Ohio, was the man who died in 1849 and was the husband of Catherine and father of my 3 greats grandfather.
Any thoughts, additions or corrections to my thinking would be appreciated.
