A biography/family history of Jesse R. Wharton is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 2. His ancestors were Scotch-Irish who settled in North Carolina about 1720.
Jesse was born 4 Nov 1857, to John Calvin and Rebecca Jane Wharton. Jesse attended Greensboro Academy and at age 15 worked in a bookstore for two years, then worked as a bank teller in the National Bank of Greensboro, 1875-1882. In 1882, he located to Butte, MT, and worked in banking until 1887. 1888-1890, was manager of Silver Bow water company; 1890-1892, manager of Butte Electric and Silver Bow Electric Light companies; 1892-1918, manager of Butte Electric Railway company.
On 9 Mar 1886, Butte, MT, Jesse married Dorcas Elizabeth Noyes, daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Noyes who came from Cushing, Quebec. Wharton children: Jesse Noyes Wharton; Carolina P. (Mrs. Edgar Wild); Carroll Clark; John Calvin.
Dorcas E. Wharton died 17 Dec 1928, age 69, Butte, MT Jesse Wharton died 19 Mar 1923, age 65, Butte, MT Jesse N. Wharton died 15 Dec 1917, age 30
