Maybe this will help.
Maryland Calendar of Wills, Volume 1:
Gilpin, Sylvanus, Chas. Co., 12th Sept., 1679; 19th Nov., 1679. To wife (unnamed) of Thomas Warton, and Eliza: and John, child. of sd. Thomas, personalty. Thomas Warton, ex. and residuary legatee of estate, including 150 A. lying by Jas. Dillahayes. Test: Michael Parving, Eliza: Warton. 10. 78.
Sylvanus was Margaret's father and this Indicates to me that in 1679 Thomas and Margaret had two children only, John and Elizabeth.
Per M. L. Donnely's book:
THOMAS WHARTON Charles County, 7/27/1702 ; 2/27/1708. (Will AB#3:35).
To his son THOMAS WHARTON he left 200 acres of "Christian Milford", 2 cows and their increase, a mare and all his clothes. To his daughter, ELIZABETH BISHOP, he left 100 acres of "Christian Milford", 2 heifers and their increase. His youngest dau., ELIZABETH WHARTON, was to receive "Christian Milford" when his oldest son and dau., THOMAS WHARTON & ELIZABETH BISHOP died. If his youngest dau. died then his wife and her heirs were to have the land.
His wife, MARY WHARTON and her heirs were to receive the rest of his personal estate. After he wrote his will, he had another son, WILLIAM WHARTON born in Mar 1706. His 3rd wife, Mary, was deceased by 1710.
Thomas married 3 times, Margaret Gilpin by whom he had Elizabeth (the elder), John and Thomas. m2: Elizabeth Beck by whom he had Elizabeth (the younger). m3: Mary MNU by whom he had William. So, in the will it is stated that his oldest son and daughter were Thomas Wharton and Elizabeth Bishop, Hence I assume there was no son John who would have been older than Thomas, as indicated by Sylvanus Gilpin's will. Also, If son John had issue during his life, I’m sure they would have been recognized in Thomas’ will.
Thomas, Jr, was born to Thomas and Margaret after 9/1679. Thomas, Sr, married Elizabeth Beck abt 1685. As Elizabeth Beck was born 10/2/1669 that marriage date may have been later. Since Elizabeth the younger was born abt 1700 there were probably some lost children before her birth.
Thomas, Sr. was married to Mary MNU before he wrote his will on 7/27/1702 so Elizabeth Beck may have died at Elizabeth the younger's birth; pure speculation on my part. William was born 3/1706, after his father wrote his will, but before he died.
Thomas, Jr. is reported to have died 4/13/1710 with proof given as "Charles County, Maryland, Probate Records, Inventories, 1673-1753". No wording from this was given. In any case both he and William had died without heirs when the following was recorded in 1722.
"23 May - 21 June 1722 Charles Co. Liber L#2, p. 35: At the request of John PHILBERT of Charles Co., planter, the following deed was recorded on June 21, 1722:May 23, 1722 from Elizabeth WHARTON of Charles Co., spinster, to John PHILBERT of Charles Co., planter, for 2000 pounds of tobacco and for the natural afeceds (sic) she has for him as being her sister's eldest son and surviving heir, she has given John, one moiety or half part of a tract of land called Christian Wellford (sic), lying in Charles Co. in Nanjemy Parish near Burdits Cr. The whole tract was bought by Thomas WHARTON, father to the Sd. Elizabeth WHARTON, from Francis THORNTON by Charles Co. deed dated June 10, 1673. Sd. Elizabeth WHARTON is the daughter and surviving heir to sd Thomas WHARTON. Signed -Elizabeth (her mark) WHARTON. Wit: Wm. Stone, Jos. HANSON".
I take from this that there are no living Whartons who descend from the Thomas Wharton who married Margaret Gilpin. Elizabeth the younger went on to marry Thomas Coomes and have 9 children, 7 of whom were living at her death in 1772.

On the back of the foregoing will was endorsed the following Probate, To Wit;
Charles County, Sct. On this sixtenneth day of November, came William Coomes Jr and James Slater, subscribing witnesses to the within Will and made oath that they saw Elizabeth Coomes the Testatrix sign the same and heard her acknowledge it to be her Last Will and Testament, that at the time of her so doing she was to the best of their apprehensions of sound & disposing mind & memory and that they together with William Coomes, Sr signed their names as witnesses to the said Will in the presence of the Testatrix & at her request. --which said probate was taken after having received a letter from Thomas Wharton Coomes, heir at law, consenting to the taking the same.

D.COM'R.
The fact that she names Christian Milford in her will proves that she was the daughter of Thomas Wharton who had owned it.
