Hello, Becky,
I have not extensively researched the N.C. Whitakers, as my Whitakers stayed in Va.I accepted what most of their descendants say, that is, they all went to N.C. (together). This is not the way migrations usually take place...Your N.C. records show Richard and John in Edgecombe Co. in 1744.At the other end of the spectrum, Dudley Whitaker was still on the Warwick records in 1759, and Gough Whitaker is on the records in 1760.So it looks as if they "trickled down" to N.C.I can't tell when William went, as there were other William Whitakers in Warwick.

Your Cary line is -
Col. Miles Cary, the emigrant, Councillor, 1623 - 1667
m. Anne Taylor

Maj. Thomas Cary #1, c. 1647 - 1708
m. Anne Milner

Thomas Cary #2, 1670 - after 1729
m. Elizabeth Hinde

Thomas Cary #3, c. 1696 - aft. 1762
m. Elizabeth

Capt. Thomas Cary #4, c. 1730 - before Dec. 1792

Elizabeth Cary b.c. 1725 was dau. of Thos. #3 and sister of #4.She m. Richard Whitaker.

Most of this comes from Adventurers of Purse and Person, or from The Virginia Carys by Fairfax Harrison.
