Abraham Friend Whiteman- History

By Lee Carr December 14, 1999 at 05:59:20

The first settlement was made in Warren Township ( Clinton Co., IN.) by A.F. Whiteman, esq. who is still ( 1882) a resident on the land which he first entered on section 23. To him is due the honor of felling the first tree and building the first cabin in Warren Township. His cabin stood just in the rear of his present residence, and was of crude and hasty construction, being of round poles and clapboard roof with puncheon floor, and heavy clapboard windows for protection against the Indians, who at that time were greatly feared, and who afterwards proved to be true friends.
He was a justice of the peace and married the first couple in Warren Township---Mary Elston to Salathiel Dickison in 1831.
The first birth occured Dec. 31, 1831 when there was born to A.F. and Mary Rinker Whiteman a daughter, Elizabeth.
Abraham and Mary came to Union County about 1825 from Tennessee, and to Warren Township in the fall of 1829. There were about twenty-five grown-ups in the party when it arrived in Warren Township ( December)winter was at hand, so everyone pitched in and helped to build a barracks-like log house. This house sheltered the whole party through the winter-men, women, and children. The building had only three sides and a fire was kept burning on the open side.
The following spring, the members of the party helped each other build separate homesteads they chose from the wilderness.
