INDIANAPOLIS - State crews plan to move a small 1800s-era cemetery to make way for a project to widen Interstate 69 on the northeast side of Indianapolis.
Work is to begin next week on relocating Whitesell Cemetery. It has at least 30 graves near the I-69 and I-465 interchange.
Archeologists and anthropologists will remove the bodies, which will be reburied at Crown Hill Cemetery.
Work will begin with headstone removal, after which the top layer of soil will be removed to allow archaeologists to work by hand to identify the grave shafts and make certain any unmarked graves are identified.
The excavation process is expected to last about three weeks.
When the cemetery is relocated, a new monument to its history will also be erected.
