Hello Mark, I am re-posting my reply here on the Whitfield forum, just in case you check here first!Forgive me but I am so thrilled to hear from you! I had just about given up searching for any trace of your grandmother and/or her sisters!
Yes, I live in Northern Ireland.Briefly, our common family connection is as follows: My paternal grandfather was Robert Mercer. Amongst others, he had 3 brothers who emigrated to the USA - William, Samuel and Charles Mercer. I understand that Charles was married to Lillian and that he was the father of your grandmother, Marion Waters, and her sisters.
If you and your family are willing, it would be really WONDERFUL to learn more about your family, and indeed the families of your grandmother's sisters. And if you are interested in knowing more about your Irish Mercer roots in County Tyrone, then I am more than happy to share whatever I can with you.
I hope I may hear back from you again very soon. In the meantime, please pass on my sincere sympathies to your mother and Aunt on the recent sad loss of their mother, and to you. I do hope that perhaps making contact with me will help in the difficult transition period of clearing out your grandmother's home today, and at least provide a new talking point. Do go easy on throwing out any old family papers, photos, etc, won't you? (Forgive me for saying this - but it's simply the "familily historian" coming out in me!)
Thank you again for responding to my post on this forum. It really is exciting to make contact with a "new" cousin! I forgot to ask ... whereabouts do you live?
With very best wishes from your 2nd cousin once removed...
