I've been giving myself a headache lately working on this Toler/Towler line, trying to discover the parents of Mary Towler who married William Whitefield 14 Dec 1772 in Goochland County VA.Here are my bits & pieces:
A James Towler, wife Mary, lived in Goochland County since at least 1760's (per Douglas Register); his estate inventory & appraisal recorded in Goochland County 15 Oct 1781. Point to note: William Whitefield & Mary Towler Whitefield's second son was named James Towler Whitefield.
John Toler, died Goochland County late 1780, estate inventory recorded Goochland County 18 Dec 1780. In a June 1781 inventory of items taken by the British from citizens in Goochland County, the estate of John Towler is included with a list of the taken items, William Whitefield listed as administrator of said estate. In the Public Services Claims, wherein Goochland County residents were reimbursed for items impressed by the colonial government/army, there is an entry for a Widow Towler on (August) 10, 1780, and two other entries for Mary Towler, dated 6 Nov 1780 & 14 Nov 1780. Point to note: William Whitefield & Mary Towler Whitefield's 5th son was named John Toler Whitefield.
An IGI record on FamilySearch has a John Toler b @1745 in Louisa County VA, d Sep 1780, father James Toler, Mother Mary.
My (very tenuous) conjecture is this: Mary Towler who married William Whitefield was the daughter of James and Mary Towler; the above-noted John Toler was her brother. I stress that this is ONLY conjecture, I'm still working on this line, it's taken a very long time just to get this far. But I'd very much welcome any thoughts/feedback on all this.
