Not sure if you have checked the Weeks Forum for postings re: Joseph Wickes/Weeks, but there is a good possibility that Joseph migrated from the Bristol area of Glocester in southwest England. He is probably the s/o Edward and Elinor and grandson of Thomas and Joan of Alveston. We know from docs that he had ties to the Bristol area and Bristol was a major port, but I haven't seen any references to his owning any ships.
The name Meconicon rings a bell and I remember seeing it listed in the Archives of Maryland. You might want to search the PCC Wills website for info on your Meconicon family in England. PCC stands for Perrogative Court of Canterbury and you can download Wills for about $7.50 each to your computer. In your searches you will have to spell Meconicon every which way you can think of and a few that you wouldn't imagine since the PCC site does not have soundex.
The story about the shipyard is written in the Maryland Archives and it would take me awhile to run it down, so I guess it has some basis of fact.None of my info is really oral, but rather from docs or the Maryland Archives.
