Re: Parents of WIlliam WIERMAN
Gertruijt was born abt 1700 in Waspik, 20 miles southeast of Rotterdam, Holland, and died abt 1753. She was the oldest of five children, four girls and a boy.She was baptized a Roman Catholic in the Waspik parish church. The source is a letter to Charles Gladfelter, Director, Adams County Historical Society from Richard Towne Sutcliffe of Dallas, Texas dated April 1, 1993. “I’ve pinned down and straightened out Gertrude Sateman/Sietman Weyerman as for starters. She was born in Waspik, 20 miles southeast of Rotterdam. She was baptized a Roman Catholic in the Waspik parish church.. . . had three sisters and a brother, all younger then she.Her surname was Seijlmans (pronounced SILL’ mns) . . . her parents: Cornelius Teunisse Seijlmans and Grietie Ariense (Barrovoets) Seijlmans.
From the looks of Waspik parish records, the suname Seijlmans -- with several careless placements of the dotted “i” and “j” appearing like a pair of umlauts atop a “y” and an inscriber’s flourish across the “l” -- probably accounted for the earlier reading as Seitman (and a much later listing as Sateman).
