Re: Wigmore - Herefordshire and Ireland
Looks like you and I are the only ones here!
Sorry I don't have anything for you, but knowing my info might direct you somehow.
My father's mother was Lucy Louella Wigmore.Don't have my info handy, but she had to be born circa 1880.She had a brother,Harry and a sister, Jenny and there were
two others I have not met. They are all deceased.
Lou's father, as the story is told, was from Maidstone, Kent, England (the garden spot of England) and he was in the British Royal Navy.Jumped ship due to lack of food, and ended up in Arkansas, opened a store, and later came to Indiana and settled on a farm. Some of the Wigmores live around Winchester, Indiana.
The twist in the story is that William Wigmore, Lou's father, was really Willam Alexander Sherwood. He changed his name to Wigmore, his mother's maiden name so that he could not be found by he Navy.
One of the Wigmore descendents worked in the courthouse at Winchester and was doing the genealogy. They were all older than I and are probably dead by now.We did not live there, so I never met them.
I have an herbal cookbook written by an Ann WigmoreI always thought this was an unusual name.
Hope this helps you in some way.If you have heard about the jumping ship incident in your family stories, please e-mail [email protected]
