Grandpa's name was John Fillmore Wilds (1856-1920). I'm curious if you'll be able to turn up anything about him in old courthouse records. Back when I was a kid, I wrote somebody up there (Okahoma Archives) but couldn't locate a death certificate for him. I also remember writing a college in Commerce, Texas to see if I could find any academic records for Grandpa. He apparently went to some sort of teacher's college in Commerce (we've got a picture -- not the original, though -- of him and his classmates). They didn't have any records either; I think that they burned.
I'm not sure just when the Wilds family moved to Oklahoma, but I assume it was in the late 1910s. As far as I know, all the kids but Aunt Marty were born in Texas. Aunt Jane, the next-to-the-youngest of John's kids, was born in 1916. Aunt Marty came along in 1920, just months before her daddy died.
Years ago, I looked through census records (on microfilm, of course) and turned up a few scraps of info. I found Grandpa's parents and one or two of his siblings in Caldwell County, Kentucky in 1850. The family was living in McNairy County, Tennessee in 1860 (the father had already died). During the 1870 census, Grandpa was back in Caldwell County, Kentucky and working as a farm laborer (the family had evidently split up after the mother died). In 1900, he was in Collin County, Texas.
