Hi Kristi (and others interested in the Wiles family of New York and Ontario, CA)
I just came upon your posting from 1998 re the Wiles family in NY, and am also searching for more info about the Wiles family of New York.
This is a long shot, I know. After more than a decade you may no longer be following this forum.
But the Wiles family you describe are no doubt the children of Tilman Wiles (Also variously listed as Tillman, Tilden, and Thomas in various records).
He was born in Pennsylvania, died in New York, and lived in Ontario for a number of years, which is where he met and married his first wife Maria Greenglass. He also appears to have bought land in Michigan, where my mom thought the Wiles family had relatives.
Tillman also served in the civil war as a union soldier. His second wife, Ellen filed for a pension.
The Canada census records for 1881 list Alfred, Maud and George - in addition to others - as his children. The town he's living in is not that far from the Buffalo/Niagara border, and I have a number of ancestors who married across country lines.
Alfred Wiles (probably the Alfred you mention) is my great grandfather on my mother's side. Tillman's marriage license lists his parents as Jacob and Mary Wiles. I have some evidence suggesting that Jacob Wiles was born in PA around 1797, but that's about as far as I've been able to go with regard to my Wiles ancestry.
If this reaches you, and you have any additional info and/or are interested in communicating further about the Wiles family, please contact me. I'd love to hear from you.
