Does anyone have any information about James Wiley who was murdered in 1863 in Virginia? This information was passed down through a GG Aunt who was the family historian. I believe that he and his son Milton were killed by bushwhackers during the Civil War as my aunt said they were killed by "people going through". He was married first to Lina Winfrey Peters before 1849, then to Nancy Lilly before 1853. Known children of James Wiley and Lina Peters are: Lida, who married a Billiu (?), she lived in Missouri; Rankin, who also lived in Missouri; George, lived in Missouri. Children of James Wiley and Nancy Lilly are: Nancy Elizabeth, b. July 17,1853 Mercer Co., (W.)Virginia, d. November 9, 1929 Putnam Co.,W.Va. (my GG Grandmother); Sarah Frances; Rachel; Marcenia; Mary Jane, (drowned in pond); Milton, killed with James in 1863 in possibly Giles Co., Va. Earlier family historians have tried to show that James Wiley was a direct descendant of Jennie Sellards Wiley, but I haven't found anything to connect them although that would be great. I would like to know more about this family but it has been hard to find anything beyond some correspondence between my aunt and some descendants of Jennie Wiley who lived in Lincoln Co., W.Va. and Kentucky back in the 1940's. They believed they were related to each other, but apparently had no proof either. Nancy Elizabeth Wiley married Joseph Henry Bird on March 4, 1873 in Mercer Co., W.Va. He was born on September 20, 1850 in Franklin Co., Va., the son of John Bird and Asenath Beckner. Any information would be greatly appreciated, especially if there is any that would tie the above family in any way to Jennie Wiley the captive of the Indians. Thanks.
