Re: frederick wilford of wisconsin
Hello...thanks for responding to my question from 2004.Since then I have made some progress in understanding the Wilford genealogy.
The Frederick Wilford you mention (son of John and Elizabeth Hardy Wilford) probably did not come to America.I believe he married Maria Pickering and had at least 3 children in Leicestershire (the last in 1881).
The Frederick Wilford b. 1821, brother to John (also brother to your James of Sheyboygan Co.) is the one in the 1850 Census in Wisconsin. These three brothers are all children of Edward (b.1787) and Ann Denshaw Wilford of Leicestershire.I have proof for this. This Frederick (b.1821) had a daughter Charlotte Ann Wilford who married her cousin Edward Wilford (a son of John and Elizabeth Hardy Wilford) in Waukesha in 1861.The marriage record lists both sets of parents.Edward and Charlotte Ann had a daughter Elenora (b.1866) who is identified in the census as Frederick (b.1821) and Ann James Wilford's grand-daughter.
Although I think I understand these family groups pretty well now, there are still things I am struggling with. For example--your James Wilford (b. 1819, South Croxton, Leicestershire) had a wife Margaret C., b. 1820 England; I have never been able to discover her maiden name or details about her birthplace. And also--when two of the Wilford boys immigrated, they came in a group of three--with a Catherine Ann Wilford.I have never been able to figure out how she was related to the boys and what happened to her once she arrived.Maybe you have answers to these puzzles.
Thanks for your response.Sincerely, R. Tolman
