My husband found a written map (written directions) just yesterday (9/27/02) dated June 1, 1929 "signed" by 3 men, one of them being W.L. Wilhite in Alberhill (Lake Elsinore), California! We were so intruiged by the finding that we decided to do some research on it. The map reads:
Monument is at the South corner of Association Placer ? known as KAOLIN-BOXITE. ? TWO comprising the NE1/4 of ? and E1/2 of NW1/4 of NE1/4, Section ? 5, R5, SBM.
Excavated June 1, 1929 by:
W.L. Wilhite Orville E. Saholt Chas. Randolph
The question marks (?) are mine meaning I can't tell what the words are because the paper and container it was in are in very bad shape. The container is of metal (extremely rusty) and at first glance looks like a flask but is just a container that opens from the top. The paper is 2 x 3 inches and looks worn and needs to be handled delicatley or it will fall to pieces. It's truly fascinating and we wonder who these men are and what the directions are for. My husband works making artificial rockformations and had to go to the mountains in Lake Elsinore through Walker Canyon Road to make moldings of the natural rocks. He said it looked like it was buried and the weather unearthed it and was about to fall off a small cliff. He shook the container to check if something was in it and found the map. If anybody knows or knew a W.L. Wilhite please let me know!
