Native American Roots among the Wilkes
In recent research on my husband's line I have been able totrace that in the 1800's a population of Cheraw/Lumbee/Saponi Indians of the Robeson NC area migrated through South Carolina into Georgia doing timber work which was vital to the building of railroads in the southeastern United STates. Many of these Native American migrated on into south Alabama and north west Florida. My husband has a Brooks line marrying into the Wilkes in Georgia and associating family groups all migrated to south Alabama north Florida..........I would be interested to know if anyone has the Wilkes of VA to Robeson, NC being traceable as Native Americans. By the mid-1800's they would have been largely considered white.
