Notes for JOHN MILLER:
John Miller was born to James Miller probably in Tennessee in the year ofour Lord, 1803. His father, James was Scotch Irish and a StaunchPresbyterian, according to George Miller. Donald Miller believes that Jamesimmigrant father settled near Charleston, South Carolina in 1758. It isdifficult to ascertain the truth of the situation without documentation.
In 1826, John Miller married Nancy Mary Wilson, of Tennessee, the daughterof Joseph Wilson, a farmer and a trader. Nancy Mary and John are listed inthe 1830 Federal Census of Monroe County, Tennessee. In 1835, the Millersand their children purchased $3000.00 worth of land in Dade County,Georgia., Dist. No. 21, near Rising Fawn. The land was purchased and not wonby lottery or given as bounty according to Dade County land records (Source:Sue Forrester – genealogist, Dade County).
John Miller was "a county and probate judge as well as a substantial farmer"according to George R. Miller's biography - Polk County, Arkansas. Earlyrecords show they were "Presbyterian Denomination who later embraced theMethodist Episcopal Church (ibid.)."
Five of John Miller's sons served the Confederacy; James died in a prisoncamp. A daughter, Elizabeth, died giving birth to her first daughter. She isthe only Miller buried in the beautiful Miller Cemetery located on theplantation. Elizabeth was married to Casper Tatum. The daughter of Elizabethand Casper, Nancy Tatum, was raised by the Tatums initially, but is buried inArkansas near her Miller grandparents (Source: Randy Lewis). Four of thesons married women from Dade County: George R. Miller married Martha Davis,Joseph married her sister, Sarah Davis.
