Winans families in Western New York
I am new to this website and glad to have found it, as I can provide informationabout two Winans families, resulting from two related marriages into the family of Benjamin Sheldon Sr.(1756-1847)and his brother Whiting Sheldon(1758-1839, both of whom are buried along with many other Sheldons and Winans in the Presbyterian Cem. on Chestnut Ridge Road in the town of Chili, County Monroe NY. I am a descendant of Benjamin Sheldon and have done considerable work on that line.
Benjamin's daughter Laura(1789-1852) married Elisha Winans (1787-1857) and they had nine children, the first of whom was Benjamin Lewis Winans b. 1809, who married Hannah Hover. B.L. and Hannah had eight children, one of whom was Alva (Alva Culver?) who married Diane Rhine. I have names and dates of the others in this family and the family of Laura and Elisha if anybody is interested.
One of Benjamin Sheldon Sr's brothera was Whiting Sheldon, who with Mary Hubbard (disputed) had eleven children , one of whom, Mary Sheldon (1784-1863) married Ira Culver Winans(1755-1853). Ira and Mary had seven children, one of whom, Theodore E. Winans b. 1809, married Cynthia Catherine Root (another family tangled up with the Sheldons). Cynthia and Theodore had ten children, of whom I mention only Lewis b. 1846 because there has been a query about that name on this forum. I have names and dates of the other children ofTheodore and Cynthia, and of Ira and Maryif anyone is interested.
The two Winans families in the preceding were in Chili in the 1820's and 30's and possible for a time in 40's. Then they disappear and are not in the earliest plat maps done in this area. They were an interesting clan and I would like to know what happened to them. It is presumed that they went west, as dis many individuals from families in this area at that time.
I hope this info is helpful to some of you Winansites!
