Walter W. - Radio/Newspaper Columnist
In the black and white TV era of the 1950's, there was a popular show about Elliot Ness who was the (? District Attorney) who fought organized crime led by the likes of Al
Capone and others. Elliot Ness was played by Robert Stack who is now well over 80 and still looks the same as 40 years ago ! The series was based on real-life crimefighter Elliot Ness (1903-1957).
Old-time radio journalist Walter Winchell was brought out of retirement to do the commentary on this TV show, to make it sound more real. Walter knew the real Elliot Ness, and was the epitomy of the newspaper reporter who "dug up the dirt" and wasn't afraid to let his audience know the details. Along with his newspaper column which appeared in hundreds of newspaper, in the 1930's he had a very popular radio program, where he barked out his reports into the microphone in a staccato, bullet-fire style that set the trend for generating excitement for the listening audience.
How does Walter Winchell fit into the family lines mentioned in this forum ? Are there any other Winchell's who went into the newspaper or communications business ?
