obituary of Donald E. Winfree, Sr
Donald E. WINFREE, 70, of 322 N. Jefferson St., Mount Union, died at
8:39 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon, following a brief illness. Born Dec. 24, 1931, in
Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Helen A. (Morris)
Winfree. He was united in marriage to Jane Collins Dec. 20, 1952, in
Mount Union. Mrs. Winfree survives. One son and six daughters survive:
Donald E. Winfree Jr., Columbus, Ohio; Carol N. Jackson, Arlene L.
Winfree and Constance G. Vaughn, all of Mount Union; April M.
Winfree-Daniels, Camp Springs, Md.; and Shelba Winfree-Murray and Paula
Piner-Holmes, both of Philadelphia. There are 12 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers and a sister:
Russell L. Winfree, El Paso, Texas; Lewis P. Winfree, California; and
Dorothea W. Bumgardner, Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by two
brothers, Charles D. Winfree and Luther F. Winfree. Mr. Winfree was a
member of Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Mount Union, where he
was a trustee. He was a member of the Juniata Lodge No. 702, Improved
Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Mount Union and the American
Legion Post, Mount Union. He was a former member of the St. Joseph F&AM
Lodge No. 125, Mount Union. Following his graduation from Captain Jack
High School, Mount Union, in 1950, he entered the U.S. Air Force. He
served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954.
He was employed by Ethel Meserve, State College, from 1954 until 1969.
He also worked at C.H. Miller, Huntingdon, in the drapery department for
several years. He owned and operated a custom drapery business in
Huntingdon from 1974 to 1980, then began work with the Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation, from where he retired. Funeral services
will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at the Mount Hope Missionary
Baptist Church, Mount Union with the Rev. I.S. Owens officiating.
Interment will be made in the Mount Union Cemetery.
