William was born, 12 Aug 1880, son of Fred C. and Louisa (Lenz) Winkelmann, born in 1855, Mecklenburg, Germany, and 1857, Germany, respectively.Fred, a businessman in Holloway, MN, immigrated to the Minnesota with his family at eleven years of age.Louisa immigrated to the US with her family at twelve of age.Children of Fred and Louisa:Fred C., Holloway, MN; Otto, Hingham, MT; Annie (Mrs. Carl Suckow, Holloway, MN); Ida (Mrs. August Kohlmann, Anamoose, ND); Earl, Holloway, MN; Bertha (Mrs. Harry Fischer, Holloway); Amelia (Mrs. Fred Schlieman, Fairfield, MN); Augusta, Holloway, MN.
After leaving school, William was a bookkeeper for his father's business in Holloway.From there he went to homestead near Sherwood, ND, then moved to Garrison, ND, where he entered the banking business for six years.On 4 Mar 1912, William arrived in Savage, MT, where he resumed banking and organized The Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Savage, & the First State Bank of Lambert, MT, in 1913.He organized the Savage Lumber Company, later known as the Standard Mercantile Company of Lambert, MT.In 1916, he was instrumental in organizing the Standard Mercantile Company of Richey, MT.
On 29 Nov 1906, Kandiyohi, MN, William married Miss Lydia Norman, daughter of N. and Caroline Norman, Yakima, WA.Her father was a native of Sweden and after coming to the US was first a farmer, then a merchant at Kandiyohi, MN.
