Miss Winstead in Sullivan Illinois, early '60's
This is a long-shot, but I am wondering if anyone knows of a woman named Winstead who taught first grade in Sullivan, Illinois in the early '60's. I was in her first grade class during the 1963-64 school year, and she is my favorite teacher.I would like to send her a note or give her a call to thank her and tell her what a great job she did back then.
My mother (who is now deceased) told me that she left town the year after she taught my class. She told my mother during a parent-teacher conference that she was returning to the South to open a tea room with her twin sister.Unfortunately, I do not know the name of either lady, or what state in the South she was from. I checked the geographic distribution of surnames in the United States for Winstead and found an interesting result. In the 1920 census, almost all Winsteads in the U.S. were residing in Virginia.By 1990, they were still in Virginia, but had branched out to Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi.I cannot say what state Miss Winstead was from, but obviously all four states match my mother's mention of a Southern state.
Incidentally, Powers School, where Miss Winstead taught was demolished last week to make way for a CVS pharmacy.I have been thinking about her for a long time, and that event crystallized my intention to try to locate her.
If anyone has any information about Miss Winstead (her maiden name, and I do not know if she subsequently married), please let me know.Thank you.
