I believe my branch of the Winter family is descended from the armigerous family of Winters from Leicester, who had links to the Huddington Winters, and who were seised of thevillages of Worthington and Breedon. The arms were similar except that the fesse was azure, not argent. Moreover, the crest was different being a hawk holding a fish in its dexter claw. I have in my possession, having been passed down the elder male line, a gold seal, holding a topaz in which this device is engraved. I have managed to trace the line back via NZ, Canada, Guyana and Barbados to at least 1737. What is typical is the use of the name Bassell as a second name in the 18th and 19th centuries, and any Winter with this name attached is likely to belong to this line.
If anyonebelieves they are of this family please feel free to make contact and I am of course vastly interested in any information that may lead me to a link from Barbados back to the family listed in the Herald's visitation of the County of Leicester in 1619 in which the crest is described.
