I have read this thread with much interest and some bemusement - the ethnicity of our WISE name, as opposed to our WISE ancestors, seems to stir much interest.
Anyway for my sixpenneth, my WISE name is an old, pre-conquest, English name. Apparently derived from a scholarly family or families where the name WISE derived from their occupation as wise-folk or teachers.
I have traced my own ancestors to the middle 18th Century in South East Lincolnshire (though I am from Yorkshire). My earliest ancestor - Joseph Wise - was married in Horsington January 10 1776.
If anyone has WISE English ancestors from Lincolnshire I would be pleased to hear from them.
Regards
Chris Wise
