Well, Oliver is listed in the hh of Porter Wethey in 1850, but being in the same hh does not mean he was a son. The census appears as
dwelling no. 1370 hh no. 1476 in Mentz, Cayuga Co. NY
Porter Withey34 val of per prop 6000 b. NY
Sarah33b NJ
Mary11 b. NY
Betsey58 b. NY
Asa49 b. NY
Oliver18 b. NY
Where Porter has an 11 year old daughter Mary; also in the household is mother Betsey, his half uncle Asa and Oliver, who I believe to be the son of his dead sister, Fidelia. And if y ou look at Porter's household in 1840, when he would be 24, there is no male child under the age of 8. Further, if Oliver was his son, he would have been born to Porter when Porter was only 16... highly unlikely.I've seen data that makes me think that Oliver was not illegitimate, but I do believe he was the son of Fidelia and Nelson Buck, who may have married.Nelson went to Peoria (I think I sent you that information) and evidently did not take his son with him; this may be why Oliver P. Buck changed his name to Oliver P. Withey 21 July 1853, about theyear he turned 21.If he had been brought up by the Witheys and had no contact with his father, he may have preferred to have the Withey/Wethey name.
