I am trying to get any information regarding my mother-in-law's father, Theodore WITKOWSKI who was born in Poland and came to the US in the 1890s. Theodore's parents were killed in a horse and buggy accident when he was a very small child. He had an older sister, who refused to take him in and raise him.His grandparents took him in and raised him until he was in his mid teens. They were also killed in a wagon accident, again leaving him an orphan. When his sister again refused to take him in, he moved in with a friend, until he reached the age of 18.At that time, he was conscripted into the Polish Army, as was the custom at the time.He served in the Polish Army for two years and was discharged. As was the custom at the time, his wages as a member of the army were held until his discharge. As a result, he received all of his army pay in a lump-sum. He used the money to pay for his passage to the United States immediately following his discharge. He married Regina CORSULand they lived in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvanie with their 6 children (three male and three female).
We have no idea regarding Theodore's final whereabouts, since he left the family in the late 1920s and left Regina to raise the six children. There has been some speculation that he may have been using the name Richard or James, after he left his family.
I do not know if any of this makes any sense, but would like to hear from anyone who can make a connection.
