ANNIE ELIZABETH WEDEKIND - obituary (Chico, CA - 1904)
An obituary out of my ggg-Uncle Marcellus "Bud" Wedekind's coffin-catalog scrapbook. (This was his mother.)
"A RARE WOMAN CALLED HOME"
With noiseless wing the Angel of Death hovered over one of Chico's peaceful homes last evening, and crossing the portal laid a soft hand upon the brow of an aged mother. With unfaltering trust the soul bade adieu to the time spent body and touching hands with Death floated out into the mysterious beyond.
Annie Elizabeth Wedekind was born in Baltimore in 1813, and would have been 91 years of age had she lived till midsummer. She crossed the plains in 1860 having many experiences on this journey, the recital of which afforded entertainment for friends in after years.
She was the mother of thirteen children, of whom six sons and three daughters are left to reverence her name. They are F.H., W.L. and O.T. Wedekind of San Francisco, G.W. of Southern California, M. Wedekind of Pokatella [sp.] Idaho, and Jefferson Wedekind of Chico, and Mrs. W.H. Crane of Los Angeles; Mrs. Ida Phelps of Lawrence, California, and Mrs. John Burkett of Chico.
Mother Wedekind was a sincere Christian woman having been a member of the M.E. Church South for a great number of years.
Her life and character presented that beautiful picture which forms the rarest charm in the home, -- a cheerful, companionable friend, and a sweet, affectionate mother. May the memory of this good old lady long remain fresh in the hearts of her friends, and may others grow to be like her.
"CARD TO FRIEND AND NEIGHBORS"
To the friends and neighbors, who so kindly assisted us during the sickness and death of our beloved mother, we desire to extend our most sincere thanks, and assure them, that their many acts of love and kindness will be treasured in our memory while life shall last. We also wish to thank all who contributed the beautiful floral offerings with which the casket was covered, and which to-day covers the last resting place of our loved one.
