I have just recieved a family tree book of the WITTEKIND'S from Germany, it dates back to the 1500's.Tons of info. lots of names.
It shows the branches and where they settled. It is called " The Family Tree of the WITTEKIND Family of Buedingen"by Prof. Dr. H, Wittekind. Headmaster at Wolfgang Ernst Gymnasium, Secondary School.
Dedicated to Mr. A. Wittekind at Cassel, on 11/02/1912.
It was printed in the A. Hellerschen Court Printing Office at Buedingen, Germany.
Translated from german to english by Philip R. Zink,May 1994.
It is 26 pages long.It has dates ofbirths, deaths, marriages, some stories about the people, how they died, times of births and deaths, spouse's parents names and where they lived, godparents names, siblings, children, addresses andmuch more. The information comes from the original church records, books, and registers, in Niedenstein, Buedingen and Gelnhausen and surrounding areas, university records, and personal info from family members still alive at that time (1911) and there were several.
Some towns and cities that are also mentioned are, Heidelberg,Hungen, Duedelsheim, Schmorditz in Saxony, Mainz,
Sandhof near Buedingen, Offenbach, Frankfort, Rauschenberg, Bittingen, Kassel-Hessen, and many more.
I believe that some of the info I have may not be available anymore due to the wars, I am not certain, but we do know that a lot of records were distroyed during the wars, which may contribute to the difficulty of finding records in Germany.I am so excited in having this info and to try to find connections to the rest of you......:+)
The old German name WITTEKIND (with several variations) means "Child of the Forest" or "Forest Offspring"The name Originates in northern Germany where it is found in early times and is also represented in history by two prominent men, Commander-in-Chief of the Saxons WITTEKINDand the author of " The deed of the Saxons"Wittekind of Corvey, a Monk inCorvey, Westphalia, he died abt. 1004 A.D.
Before the 12th century there were no family names, just first names.
Hope to find some family out there...
