Hello!
Elizabeth Wombacher Knebel was my great-great grandmother. I have the info about John Wombacher (Elizabeth's dad) B., D., and M. where they were from in Bavaria, etc. My info comes from a family history written by Sister Mary Clotildis in 1945. I don't know her connection to the family.
John's first wife was Catherine Hoffman and they were married 14 May 1816. She is buried in Germany. John's father was Peter Wombacher b. 1761, d. 28 December 1813, m. 16 May 1790. Peter's wife was Margaretha Belle b. 28 January 1766, d. 18 August 1843.
John's second wife was Eva Valentine Michel. Her father was Valentin Michel and her mother was Catherine Seipel. They are from Wasserlos and I haven't a clue if that's in Bavaria or Germany. I have a picture from someone that is supposed to be Eva Michel Wombacher. She is a very scarry looking lady!
I have information that John Wombacher died four days after being kicked in the head by a horse. He and his sons spent time working on the C & O Canal and the B & O Railroad during the time they lived in Cumberland, Maryland. Then they moved to Iowa and settled near Riverside, IA.
Some of my information also come from a lady in Riverside, Iowa who, like me, is related to the Wombacher's through the Knebel family.
Oddly enough, she just recently sent me a letter asking if I had gatheed any more info, particularly the location in Germany/Bavaria that the family came from. I have tried tracking down that location in Germany/Bavaria.Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of maps and gazetteers that are old enough and then they are written in the old German. I'm also suspicious of the spellings of the locations. For years and years the Knebel family pronounced the name "Wombacher". A friend of our family who speaks and reads German fluently told me the name, in German, is pronounced "Vombacher". So if someone told someone where the family was from, it may have been written differently or phonetically which would meanthat after all these years, we've been looking for the wrong place!
Hope you can use this info! I don't have a lot on the extended Wombacher family because I've been research just my straight geanealogical line. But I do have some.
Katie
