Re: Murder of Uriah Womersley at Kiklees Park, Hartshead cum Clifton, 1827
Hi again Deirdre,
Yes there certainly are "other errors" being made by fellow researchers re Joseph Bentley b. 1765, though the line leads back to the same paternal Grandparents, James Bentley b 1699 and Grace Longbottom. James born 1725 was the elder brother of Joseph b. 1730 (the husband of Mary Deane). But of course the researchers are missing the opportunity to research the correct female line, and you are right in thinking that James's wife was Sarah Farrand.
Re James baptism. The baptism is correct, but I have 2 dates (both correct!) This is what I have in my tree; Baptism St Peter's Birstall 31st Jan 1724/25 - James son of James Bentley of Cleckheaton.(24th January - 1725, New Style)
The church's calendar used to go from Lady Day to Lady day (on the 25th March) This was the Julian Calendar and was changed to come into line with the rest of Europe, who used the Gregorian Calendar (from January 1st to Dec 31st). For certain other reasons, to do with leap years, 11 days were "lost" during the changeover, which caused a great deal upset with the population! There is a very good explanation of the Old style/new style calendars on the Genuki site; www.cree.ie/genuki/dates.htm
Re the marriage to Sarah Farrand, I have; BIRSTALL MARRIAGES; St Peter Birstall. No 270 James Bentley of Little Gomersall in this parish and Sarah Farrand of Morley In the Parish of Batley were married in this Church by banns. This Twentieth Day of November in the year One Thousand Seven Hundred and fifty eight.(?) Harrison Curate. This Marriage was Solemnized between us: James Bentley x Sarah Farrand her mark. In the presence of John Cotton and Thomas Fox. Record courtesy of Richard Ward (from film/fiche at Cleckheaton Library).
Re your Hartshead Mortimers, I'm sorry I haven't yet researched the Mortimer line. My direct ancestor who was a Mortimer was Mary who married Joshua Wilbie at Birstall 13th September 1733. She was the mother of Martha Wilbie who married into my Squire line. The family lived at Roberttown and used Hartshead church (although Roberttown and Liversedge are in the parish of Birstall, Hartshead church, in the parish of Dewsbury, was much nearer). But as you seem to be "local" you will probably already know that!
I have a disc with all the Hartshead PRs on from 1810 to 1600s. I also have the PR indexes in booklet form, from 1810 onwards, and I would be pleased to do any look-ups.
Please get in touch with me on my Woodcock tree, which is devoted to all the Woodcocks in the Hartshead/Liversedge/Birstall/Cleckheaton area. You can email me through the tree, then I can email you direct. The address is;
there is no password for the tree, as it is open to the public. There is an option to send an email to the administrator, which is me.
