Re: William Woodard of Culpeper Co., VA
I don't have the Mary that you cited in my database. But, if your Mary J. Woodard was born about 1820, then she was born in either Culpeper or Madison counties because Rappahannock county wasn't created until 1833. Most of the early marriage records in Rappahannock county list witnesses, who were usually relatives, and those records should help you identify her parents. More importantly, if she was only 18 when she married, Mary had to have the approval of her father or legal guardian to marry and those records are also available at the courthouse. I might also suggest that you look at the 1830 census for all Woodwards/Woodards in Culpeper and Madison counties and identify all of the males who had daughters about 10 years of age or less. There shouldn't be too many eligible males. I have only done this for the 1810 and 1820 census returns for the Woodard family.
