George W. Woolman b. 1810 NY son of Heman Woolman
I am certain, on the basis of strong circumstantial evidence, that George W. Woolman was son of Heman Woolman and Patience Milk(s).Posted below is the information I have about the descendants of Heman and Patience Woolman and the evidence that George W. is probably their son.
Descendants of Heman Woolman
Generation No. 1
1.HEMAN3 WOOLMAN(RALPH2, RAIF1) was born bef. 1784 in MA (probably Berkshire County), and died probably bef. 1851, probably in Ontario Province, Canada. He married (1) PATIENCE MILK abt. 1805, probably in Rensselaer County, NY, daughter of LEMUEL MILK and MARY THURSTON.She was born bef. 1784 in NY, and died abt. 1825 in NY.He married (2) MRS.HANNAH WILLCOX, aft. 1825"at the River Thames", Ontario, Canada. The River Thames area of Canada is not far from Detroit, MI.Hannah perhaps is the Hannah Woolman, b. 1797 in NY who died aft. 1851, probably in Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada.
Notes for HEMAN WOOLMAN:
Information about the marriage to Patience Milk is from the Milk family genealogy (genealogylibrary.com).Information about the marriage to the widow Hannah Willcox is from the journal of Dr. Clark Joslin. In the 1810 federal census, Heman "Wolman" was in Lima, Ontario County, NY (present-day Livingston County), with a family of3 boys and 1 girl under the age of 10, a wife whose age is shown as 26 or above, and his own age given as 26 or above.
See notes for Hannah Willcox for information about Heman’s estimated date of death.
Notes for PATIENCE MILK:
Am estimating her date of death more or less from the fact that according to Clark Joslin's journal, Heman visited Clark’s father John Gaines Joslin, in Ohio while Heman was on his way to Canada.John Gaines Joslin moved his family to Michigan in 1827.
Notes for MRS. HANNAH WILLCOX:
She may be the Hannah Woolman b. 1797 in New York listed in the 1851 census of Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. From ancestry.com

However, Uxbridge is located about 15 km NE of Toronto--perhaps a little far from the Thames River?
Children of HEMAN WOOLMAN and PATIENCE MILK are:
i. RALPH4 WOOLMAN, b. Abt. 1807, New York State1; d.Aft. 1880, probably Machias, Cattaraugus, NY.
It appears that Ralph never married.
There was a Ralph WOODMAN in the 1840 census at Otto, Cattaraugus, NY, living right next door to a George W. Woodman. Both were young men between 20 and 30 years of age.I am all but certain that this should have been WOOLMAN (this same mistake was made in later censuses) and that George W. is the George W. Woolman who ended up in Michigan.See notes for George W.Ralph remained in Cattaraugus, County.Lemuel Woolman was also at Otto in 1840. Lemuel is certainly the son of Heman Woolman and Patience Milk.
Ralph WOODMAN's household in 1840 was: 00001//000000In other words, he was living by himself.
In 1855 Ralph WOOLMAN was in the state census at Persia.Residence, family and page nos. were 14 14 183
He was still at Persia in the 1860 federal census, age 53, b. NY, a laborer in the household of Jerome Albro.(Jerome Albro was also in the 1855 state census at Persia, but Ralph was not in his household at that time.]
In 1865 Ralph WOODMAN was in the state census at Perrysburg (index on the Cattaraugus County site states he is on p. 298 of the microfilm).
In 1870 he was still at Perrysburg, age 63, a day laborer, living by himself
In 1880 he was at Machias, Cattaraugus, NY (name transcribed as WOODLAND--but clearly Woolman in the image), laborer, age given as 70, living as "inmate"of the Cattaraugus County Poorhouse.
2. ii. LEMUEL WOOLMAN, b. Abt. 1808, New York State, perhaps Easton area; d. Aft. 1880,Cattaraugus County,NY.
iii. DAUGHTER WOOLMAN, b. Bef. 1810.
3. iv. GEORGE W. WOOLMAN, b. March 28, 1810, perhaps Lake George, Warren, New York; d. December 18, 1883, probably Lakeview, Saginaw, MI.
Generation No. 2
2.LEMUEL4 WOOLMAN (HEMAN3, RALPH2, RAIF1) was born Abt. 1808 in New York State, perhaps Easton area, and died Aft. 1880 inCattaraugus County, NY.He married (1) MARY ANN ?.She was born Abt. 1804, and died August 9, 1838 in NY.He married (2) SALLY BUTLERbef. 1840 in Otto, Cattaraugus, NY, daughter of ABEL BUTLER and POLLY MORGAN.She was born Abt. 1822 in Otto, Cattaraugus, NY, and died Aft. 1880.
Notes for LEMUEL WOOLMAN:
In the History and Genealogy of the Milk and Milks Family, Lemuel Woolman is said to be cousin of Benjamin Milk.Information on his date of birth is from census information. This is consistent with census data on Heman Woolman from the 1810 census.I am assuming that Lemuel was named for his grandfather, Lemuel Milk. His initials are L.M. Woolman.L. Woolman, b. ca. 1806 is in the 1880 census at Salamanca, Cattaraugus, NY.His father's birthplace is said to be Massachusetts, his mother's, NY. This is consistent with known facts.Patience Milk was born in NY. The two siblings of Heman Woolman whose birth is on record were born in Sheffield, Berkshire, MA.Lemuel was living alone in 1880.

It seems probable that Lemuel was living in the Schagticoke region until after his wife died.Possibly he stayed living with or near the Milks, his mother's family when his father moved west.By the time of the 1840 census he was living at Otto, Cattaraugus, NY.The Milks family, in general, moved to Cattaraugus County around the mid 1830s.
In the 1840 census Lemuel was at Otto, Cattaraugus, NY on the same page as the Ingrams (his Aunt Sybil Jemima Woolman was wife of Peter Ingram). There was a young woman aged 15-20 in his household. This would have been Lemuel's second wife, Sally, who would have been approximately 18.He is still in Otto in 1850, with wife Sally and a baby daughter. In 1860 he and wife Sally are at Leon, Cattaraugus, NY.In 1865 he is in the state census index at Little Valley.By 1870 Lemuel and Sally are living in separate households.Lemuel was at Little Valley, Cattaraugus, NY, living alone.I didn't locate Sally. In 1875 Lemuel was in the state census at Salamanca. In 1880 Sally (b. 1822 in NY) was head of household at Leon while Lemuel (L. Woolman) was at Salamanca. Each was living alone. A Butler family file on ancestry.com states that Sally Butler´s marriage to "Woolman" ended in divorce.
Child of LEMUEL WOOLMAN and SALLY BUTLER is:
i. BETSEY A.5 WOOLMAN3, b. November 1849, Otto, Cattaraugus, NY; d. Bef. 1860, , Cattaraugus, NY.
Notes for BETSEY A. WOOLMAN:
Her age is stated as 10/12 (that is to say, under 1 year) in the 1850 census, which was dated August 20, 1850.She does not appear in her parents' household in 1860 or thereafter in either household, suggesting she died young.
3.GEORGE W.4 WOOLMAN (HEMAN3, RALPH2, RAIF1) was born March 28, 1810 in perhaps Lake George, Warren, New York, and died December 18, 1883 in probably Lakeview, Saginaw, MI.He married ELIZABETH SUSAN SANDERS (or SAUNDERS) Abt. 1835 in NY, possibly daughter of JOSEPH SANDERS and POLLY who were living at Collins, Erie, NY by 1840, when they were in the census there.Certain circumstantial evidence supports this parentage for her, including but not limited to the fact that George had children named Polly and Nelson Joseph, but it needs stronger proof. She was born March 18, 1820 in Rupert, Bennington, VT, and died May 12, 1900 in Hemlock, Saginaw, MI.
Notes for GEORGE W. WOOLMAN:
George and his wife buried in Richland Township Cemetery, Hemlock, Saginaw, MI.Daughter Polly and her husband also buried there,. and also daughter Eliza Lee and her husband.
Birthdates of children and places of birth (states) taken from census information.
George and his family were in the following censuses:
1850 and 1854 at Chesterfield, Macomb, MI
1860 at Groveland, Oakland, MI (post office Ortonville)
1870 same place
1880 at Lakefield, Saginaw, MI
Where was George in 1840?I am convinced that he isthe George W. WOODMAN, aged 20-30, who was living next door to Ralph WOODMAN at Otto, Cattaraugus, NY.He had the following household:
10001//10001.This would fit with known facts.Daughter Polly and son Samuel were born before 1840.I believe that this would make George W. the third son of Heman Woolman.
