Wormells in Germany
My great grandfather made his way to Boston fromGermany as a cabin boy when he was 16. He arrived in Boston in 1856. His name was William Charles Wormell. He was a captain throughout his life and never spoke much about Germany, or English for that matter. Sometime between 1900 and 1902, the "e" was added onthe end by his eldest daughter as there was a lot of anti-german sentiments going around in Boston during that time...so the story goes.
Both Essen and Stetin Germany have been mentioned as possible places he is from but also may be likely ports he sailed from. His citizenship papers say "Prussia, Germany" on them.
If anyone has any knowledge of a German Wormell connection, I would appreciate some information. At this point, giving a DNA sample and waiting for a match is about all that can be done.
