Thomas Winn d Nov 16, 1824 Fluvanna Co., VA and Elizabeth Dabney Anderson
I am seeking information on the ancestry/descendants of the family of Thomas Winn, d Nov 16, 1824 Fluvanna Co., VA and his wife, Elizabeth Dabney Anderson.Elizabeth's parents were Rev. George Anderson and Frances Woodson. I have no additional information on either the Anderson or the Woodson families.
I believe that the parents of Thomas Winn were John Winn (died 1798) probably in Hanover Co., VA)and Mary Pledger.
According to the following source which was taken from a series of newspaper articles: Rev. Benjamin Lucius Ancell M.A., D. D., "Fluvanna County And Its People," Article No. 1The Winn Family of Fluvanna, "The numerous Winns whose names adorn the Fluvanna records are all descendants of John Winn of Hanover, through his sons who acquired land in Fluvanna. These three sons were:1. Hezekiah Winn. 2. John Winn, Jr.3. Thomas Winn.Their father sometimes borne as Capt. John Winn, appears frequently in the records of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover. He died about 1798, intestate, leaving a considerable estate including property in Goochland county; widow, Mary, probably nee Pledger, and several children, whose names are obtained from a paper drawn up and signed by Chief Justice John Marshall, concerning the distribution of the estate of the said John Winn. That paper was long in the possession of the late Dr. John F. Winn, of Fluvanna and Richmond; it was lent to a relative who died before it had been recovered.I have personally seen it, and copied the names of the children.B. L. A......".
Does anyone have a copy of this paper that was drawn up by John Marshall?
We are descended from Thomas and Mary Pledger(?) Winn through Ann Winn, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Dabney Anderson Winn, and her husband Edward Catterton Ancell who were married August 30, 1813 in Fluvanna Co., VA.I would love to exchange and verify any information and sources that others might have on the Winn family in this line.
Source: Newspaper:Rev. Benjamin Lucius Ancell M.A., D. D., "Fluvanna County And Its People," Article No.2, "Thomas Winn: he also had bought land in Fluvanna before it was separated from Albemarle, and later was possessed of more that 1,200 acres. He served in the Revolution, being commissioned an ensign in the Fluvanna militia in 1777; he was discharged in May, 1780.He was later prominent in the military or ganization of the county, and was Captain, and later Major, in the Militia. In February 1792, he was appointed Commissioner of the Revenue Tax.He was born December 27, 1753 and died November 16, 1824.(Bible and Tombstone dates). He married Elizabeth Dabney Anderson; bond dated June 6, 1780.She was daughter of George Anderson of Fluvanna (who gives consent to her marriage) and his wife Frances Woodson..."
Note that Rev. Ancell quotes from both Bible and Tombstone information.Has anyone seen either of these transcriptions in whole?
I would be delighted to receive any information at all on any of these lines.Sincerely, Judith Weeks Ancell, 1810 Edgecliff Terrace, Boise, ID 83702-2911jancell@spro.net
