Joseph P. Zeman was born, 30 Dec 1866, near Prague, Bohemia, son of Frank V. and Anne (Hroch) Zeman.Frank, a stone mason,was born near Prague in 1842.In 1867, he brought his family to Prairie de Chien, WI, and lived there the rest of his life working as a stone mason and a machinest for the railroad. Anne Hroch was born near Prague, in 1842.Children of Frank and Anne Zeman: Joseph P., Charles M., Mary (Mrs. F. G. Horal), d. Sep 1918, Denver, CO.; Annie; Frank (d. in infancy); Frances (Mrs. John H. Widman), Prairie du Chien, WI; John F., Prairie du Chien; Alvina (d. age 21).
Joseph P. Zeman was educated in Prairie du Chien but left school at age 14 and worked for two years in a sawmill and one year in a sash and door factory in Chicago. From 1889to 1915 he was a manufacturing and retailing confectioner in Prairie du Chien. In Dec 1915, Joseph came to Montana and became president of the Ballantine State Bank.He also owned a 40-acre irrigated ranch by the schoolhouse on the townsite of Ballantine, and 280 acres of dry farming land two miles south of Ballantine.
Joseph married Miss M. Patricia Garvey, of Sheridan, WY, in 1912.She was born in Prairie du Chien, WI, daughter of Christopher and Maria (Prant) Garvey.She was well educated, a talented musician, and taught art for several years. Her father was born in Ireland, 1834, and came to the US at the age of 16.He was a leading merchant at Prairie du Chien, and died there in 1894.
