Brazilla Garner Wall (b. August 1848, d. Notes for Brazilla Garner Wall:
The surname of JERRELL or JARRELL or JERRALD is
valid for Elizabeth. My question is whether Elizabeth
was the mother of Marilla Belle WALL Wilkinson. If you
look carefully at the dates of birth, there is a
bastardy record of one B. G. WALL and a girl named
Sarah JARRELL (who MUST be a single woman to be named
on a bastardy record) who tried to hide the birth of a
child in 1866. Due to the date of the bond, I presume
this is the same child as Marilla. But the records
also shows that B. G. WALL married 22 Jan 1864 to
Elizabeth JERRALD in Guilford County, NC.This may be
the source of the "FitzGERALD" name you mentioned. The
record is very clear on the date so I presume that
Brazilla first married Elizabeth but fathered a child
by Sarah JARRELL, dau. of James and Martha (POWELL)
JARRELL, who could possibly have been a different
woman, as sister of Elizabeth? There is no data that
supports it on the census, so I chose instead to treat
Sarah and Elizabeth as the same woman for now pending
further investigation. You may possibly find some
clues to unravel this mystery.
PS. B. G. WALL was born 1845 and not 1848. He was five
years old in 1850's census, but I believe due to his
small size and the impending war that his parents
understated his age in order to keep him out of the
war in the early 1860's. He was 13 in 1860's census
and would have been underaged for most of the war.
Wiley and Jereter lost at least two sons to the war (I
know Jesse and probably Robert died) and also lost at
least two daughters (I know Hannah died in 1870 and
probably also Edeth sometime before 1870) after the
war ended. Only Josiah, Ruth, and Brazilla survived
the war. Josiah inherited the land, Ruth married a
PEACOCK who died in the war, and later bore an
illegitimate child by Robert LAMB. Brazilla went to
Indiana shortly after the war ended and worked as a
farmhand on the Oliver Mendenhall farm according to
the 1870 census. From family legend, we have it that
Wiley and Jereter moved to Indiana with their
grandson, my great grandfather William Franklin WALL
when he was a small boy. The reason they moved him to
Indiana becomes more apparent when we see that his
mother had died in 1870 and the grandparents were
charged with maintenance of an illegimate child in a
late stage of their lives. They eventually had Will
live on a farm with Clark HOSIER in Henry County, IN
and he grew up to manhood and married my great
grandmother, Josie BENBOW, when he was 19 and she 16.
This information is from Tim Wall a descendant of William Franklin Wall.
