Notes for John Denison:
The "Denison Genealogy: ancestors and descendants of Captain George Denison" published in 1963 on page xxi states: " The earliest known ancestor of Capt George Denison was: John Denison, who lived in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England.
It is not known where he was born but probably about 1530." He bought a home and land in Bishop's Stortford from John and Joan Chandler in 1563. He was shown as a "collector for the poor" in Bishop's Stortford in 1566. Was a member of St.
Michael's Church in that city. Will dated 10 Nov 1582, probated 1 Mar 1582/83. The will mentioned his wife Agnes; sons John, William, and Edward; unnamed daughters; unborn child; and siblings William, Jane, and Agnes. He died of the plague and
was buried in Bishop's Stortford on 4 Dec 1582..
"The Denison family had been established in England for many centuries, the name being on record in counties Norfolk and Cambridge as early as 1273. In 1379 Robert Denysson was named in the Poll Tax of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Both Denise
and Denis were highly popular as baptismal names in France. In addition to a suggested origin as a font (first or baptismal) name, Denison, Dennison, and other variants, may be from the Anglo-Saxon 'Denisca' or Danish.
Note: "There is evidence of his having lived in Bishop's Stortford as early as 1567."
The Denison Coat of Arms features the following: "Arms--Argent, on a chevron engrailed gules between three torteaux, an annulet or. Crest--A dexter arm erect vested vert, the hand proper grasping a scimitar. Motto--Domus grata
"The two coats of arms read the same, ie., the charges are the same. The shapes are different and the crests also are different. The crest on Maj. Gen. Daniel Denison's grave is a helmet, color steel, arm green. The other crest is a dexter or
right arm bent, clothed in green, holding a sword. Arms--Argent (silver) the red is the chevron, the scallops around the chevron are the engrailed gules; three torteaux, three black cannon balls; annulet or (gold) medal. On the Daniel Denison
coat of arm you'll notice that the color of this shield is gold instead of silver as in the other one and that the chevron is blue."
