On the 1850 census, the name is spelled Kane. 1860 census has it spelled Keane butthen the 1870-1880 census it is back to being spelled Kane.
The occupations listed for William are:1870 Errand Boy, 1880- Bartender, then eventually he became the owner of the bar at 81 Ferris St.The 1891 and 1892Lain's Brooklyn and Long Island Business directory lists him, but in the 1893 directory, William is no longer listed.Frank is now listed as Liquors, at 81 Ferris St.This was the time that William died.
William and his wife Ann Carter Cain, became ill, then died within three years of each other.Their three young boys, Thomas, William and John were sent to live with and were raised by William's brother Frank and his wife Annie.This is how Frank and Annie got ownership of the bar.
The death certificate lists him as a Saloon Keeper.Father and mother were born in Ireland.He died at 4:00 am, from consumption (now known as Tuberculosis) and a second cause of death is listed but is unreadable.He had the consumption for about 6 months.Certificate is signed by John Harrigan, MD. 401 Clinton St.
