Kenneth Leonard Armstrong joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 13th,
1961 and retired at the Rank of Master Warrant Officer on February 7th, 1986. He
subsequently, joined the Public Service of Canada on February 10th, 1986 working for
the Department of National Defence. Kenneth also returned to College from 1981 to
1984, taking night courses, and graduated with a Diploma in the Electronics Engineering
Technology 3 year Program in 1985.
Kenneth took up lessons to learn to play the Great Highland Bagpipes in 1986, and was
transferred to Guelph from 1987 to 1988, where he was a member of the Guelph Legion
Pipes and Drums under the direction of the Pipe Major Bruce Anderson. On his return to
Ottawa in early 1988, he joined the Kemptville Legion Pipes and Drums under the
direction of the Pipe Major Reid MacKim. He joined The Ottawa Police Pipes and
Drums in September 1988, under the direction of the Pipe Major Patrick Hayes (the band
then became the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Police Pipes and Drums, but reverted back to
the Ottawa Police Pipes and Drums in 2001). One of the most memorable events, as part
of the Ottawa Police Band, was taking part in the opening ceremonies for the
Confederation Bridge in PEI in 1997, as a member of the short lived Confederation
Bridge Pipe Band.
Kenneth Leonard Joseph Armstrong was named after his father's brother Kenneth Joseph Armstrong, who passed away in 1940.
